Perlite is a naturally occuring, non-toxic, inert, lightweight, incombustible, asbestos free, virtually pH - neutral volcanic glass.

When quickly heated above 800 °C, perlite expands up.

Expanded perlite is 20 times the perlite ore's original volume.
6%
Expansion is caused by the 6% combined water ratio in the perlite ore.
